Carrera was founded in 1956 in Austria by Wilhelm Anger who initially created sports glasses inspired by motor racing. Twenty years later, he changed the name of his brand with Optyl International deciding to devote himself to the creation of motorcycle masks and ski masks.
In 1964, Wilhelm Anger developed and patented the material "Optyl", that is a plastic hardened with a heat 20% less powerful than that needed by the acetate, with a reduction of allergic reactions and a better fit through a memory effect that it provided permanent elasticity and dimensional stability. So something unique and decidedly innovative.

Carrera has always been a brand very close to the sports world with its sunglasses. In the 1980s he sponsored sporting events such as the America's Cup, the 1988 Winter Olympics and Formula 1 races.
In 1996 the Carrera headquarters moved to Padua, Italy, home of eyewear and a nation that saw the birth of many famous fashion brands all over the world.
